Balancing Progress with Preservation

Residents are worried about harmful growth. We know we are growing, but our growth must be responsible. The current ordinances have not kept up with the changing times.
I will correct the discrepancies and inconsistencies that leave us open and vulnerable. As always, I welcome input from our local businesses and our community.
Property taxes continue to go up year after year. My plan will address the threat of a tax increase.
I do not support borrowing money from our rainy day fund, like we did last year; that is not sustainable.
I will carefully manage how we spend tax dollars, stop costly lawsuits, and ask tough questions. If the city of Cleveland, Georgia, used a grant to purchase its firetruck at no taxpayer cost- why didn't we?
No one is happy with the increasing traffic congestion.
I will ensure the county and the Department of Transportation collaborate to be proactive.
Why would the county approve the developments at HWY 400 and 60 and call for the traffic impact study after the approval?
I will ensure the county and the Department of Transportation are in partnership to prevent future issues.
To have a vibrant, balanced community, Lumpkin must have a wide range of home prices. That way, our young families can purchase their first home.
Responsible growth does not stop there. It's also about jobs.
I am bullish on supporting our local businesses that provide these jobs so our children can raise their families close to home.
I will prepare for our future while protecting what you love about Lumpkin.
Lumpkin County needs a stronger voice to address the negative impact of the University's tax exemptions.
I will lead a collaboration that will include all counties that have institutions of higher learning.
Together, we will have a stronger voice for Lumpkin that I will personally take to the State level.
Now is the time to build a stronger partnership between the city, the county, our schools, and the University of North Georgia.
Together, we will be better.
I am here to serve all of Lumpkin.
Text or email me - I would love to hear from you.

J.B. Jones, the 24-year sole Commissioner of Lumpkin County, endorses Katherine James for Commission Chair. Stating, “I think she will be the best and the most qualified person for the job.” J.B. is one of many long time residents voting for James in the May 2026 election.
Katherine's roots in Dahlonega date back over
30 years. In that time, she has seen firsthand the changes and challenges facing Lumpkin County.
As a Georgia Tech graduate, Katherine has led teams both nationally and internationally, and negotiated large contracts with companies such as the USPS, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin.
Katherine has supported Lumpkin County citizens serving on the Board of Equalization, where property owners without attorney representation, have a forum to express concerns about increases in their property taxes.
Chairman of the Lumpkin County Republican Party for five years, Katherine's leadership helped to grow membership by over 250%.
Katherine continues to engage with people across Lumpkin County as they voice their frustration about current laws, inconsistencies, and deep concerns about growth and development.
We have experienced over a 40% growth in the
past 10 years, while managing land use with only setbacks and mere buffers.
County taxes continue to rise year after year, and Katherine questions the strained relationship between the city and county, and why over $300,000 of our tax dollars were wasted when Lumpkin County sued the city of Dahlonega?
Katherine is looking forward to mending the relationship between the county and city and will encourage open communication with all residents
of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County.
I believe that now is the time for fresh ideas and a new approach. We must have leaders who are trusted to have our best interests in mind while having a clear vision for the future. We must eliminate inconsistencies and uncertainties in our laws, if we don’t more wasteful lawsuits will continue at the expense of Lumpkin County residents.
We need to balance growth with consideration of the GA MTN Regional Commission Comprehensive Plan from 2022, where citizens expressed their desires and ideas.
Together, we can foster a working relationship with joint work sessions, collaborative meetings, and shared common goals that benefit all. I will create opportunities for the residents of Lumpkin County
to have their voices heard.
I will raise awareness among property owners so they can protect their property against fraud. With our explosive growth, the chance of fraud increases. Every property owner in Lumpkin County should know how to proactively protect their property when documents related to their property are recorded. This helps individuals detect potential fraud early, like unauthorized deed filings, and take appropriate action. Signing up for these free alerts is a proactive step homeowners can take to protect their property from title theft and scams.
Being in leadership roles throughout my career, I believe in fostering an environment where everyone can feel that they can express ideas, even if those ideas might be different than my own. I will hold quarterly brainstorming sessions, department by department, to identify obstacles and challenges so that we as a county can reach our full potential.
I will stand up against projects that hurt our citizens and support projects that enhance our community.
I will lead Lumpkin to a better future, as we balance progress with preservation- Katherine
